LaSalle Parish Pedestrian Fatality
A 43yearold Jena, LA man was fatally injured in a single vehicle incident around dark December 13, 2014. He was struck by a vehicle just outside of the Jena city limits, on LA Hwy 8 West, according to a report from Louisiana State Police.
Troopers responded to the incident, around 5:41 PM, which occurred near the intersection of Andrews Road and HWY 8 near Jena.The incident involved a 2007 Chevrolet pickup driven by Brittany N. Walker, 22, of Jena, and a pedestrian, identified as Marcus W. Jones, 43, also of Jena.
The Chevrolet was eastbound on LA Hwy 8 when Walker observed an object, later determined to be Jones, in the roadway. She attempted to avoid striking Jones by steering right, but was not successful. The Chevrolet struck Jones in the upper torso.Prior to being struck, Jones was lying down in the eastbound lane and was wearing a black jacket and black pants.
While Troopers were investigating the incident, a friend of Jones arrived on the scene. The friend informed Troopers that earlier that evening, Jones had been riding in the bed of his truck, standing and holding down wooden pallets. Once the friend arrived at their destination, he realized that Jones was no longer in the bed of the truck and was attempting to locate him when he came upon theincident scene.
Routine toxicology tests are pending, and as press time Monday, December 15, 2014, the accident remained under investigation.
Troopers would like to remind pedestriansto always make themselves visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials, when walking near a roadway.Pedestrians walking at night should try to carry a flashlight for added safety. Pedestrians should always walk on a sidewalk, but if a sidewalk is not available, they should walk on the shoulder. If no shoulder is available, they should walk as close to the roadway edge as possible, always facing traffic.
Troop E has investigated 48 fatal crashes in 2014, resulting in 60 fatalities.This is the second pedestrian death this year along this stretch of LA Hwy 8.
