Man Shoots Himself After Standoff with Deputies
A Rapides Parish man shot himself after a long standoff with officers from a two-parish area early Wednesday morning, October 16, 2013, in the Saline swamp area of LaSalle Parish.
Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office was contacted about 9 PM Tuesday night, OCT 15, 2013, regarding a subject who possibly was a danger to himself and others. A welfare concern check was initiated to locate the subject. Deputies received information about the subject’s possible location and traveled to the area off of Rosier Road in Deville, LA. When deputies located the subject in his vehicle and attempted to stop him for welfare concerns, the subject rammed an RPSO unit and fled the area. The deputy in the unit wasn’t injured. Other RPSO deputies then pursued the subject as he fled into LaSalle Parish.
LaSalle Parish deputies were alerted shortly before 10 PM and assisted in stopping the subject in the Saline swamp area, off of LA 18 in lower LaSalle Parish.
After he was stopped, the subject remained in his vehicle for the next few hours as officers attempted to get him to surrender. Around 2 AM, the subject exited his vehicle armed with a handgun, which he turned on himself, and fired one shot into his own chest.
Deputies immediately rendered first aid and helped transport the subject out of the area to an awaiting helicopter, which carried him to an Alexandria, LA, hospital. He remained in the hospital of as Monday, October 21, 2013and is expected to make a full recovery.
The subject’s name is not being released at this time and the investigation into this incident is still ongoing, officers said.
